Keffi FMC to privatise lab services

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi, in Nasarawa State is set to meet with stakeholders within and outside the hospital to educate them of its initiative to allow a private business utilize the hospital’s facilities to operate a private laboratory at the centre.
Daily Trust learnt that the Private/Public Partnership (PPP) committee of the centre, headed by the Deputy Head of Clinical Services, Dr. C.N. Ohiaeri, has completed its work with a report to the management, adopting the initiative as beneficial to the centre and patients.
The report, Daily Trust learnt further, however advised the centre’s management to first invite and educate both internal and external stakeholders of the centre, in order to disabuse their minds about the initiative as exploitative to patients, or as allowing a private business make profit off the centre’s facilities.
When contacted, the Medical Director (MD) of the hospital, Dr. Joshua Giyan confirmed that the centre has initiated a forum called FMC Keffi Stakeholders’ Forum, where the management and stakeholders can meet and rob minds on the developmental needs of the federal health facility.
He said the management will invite stakeholders including staffs and members of the public and educate them on the proposed initiative that will allow Pathcare, the private firm, to establish and operate within the premises of the hospital.
But he said Pathcare’s proposal is yet to receive a full nod from the management, to commence operations at the hospital, as according to him, “there are stages to follow, and we haven’t decided on that.”
Meanwhile, stakeholders of Keffi community, including members of Keffi Development Foundation (KDF), Keffi Development Forum (KDF), and Keffi Concerned Group (KCG), have been meeting over the initiative, and have gone ahead to set up health committees, to make finds and report back.
Alhaji Abubakar Madaki, the president of Keffi Development Foundation told Daily Trust on phone that the organization will welcome an invitation from the centre, but said members’ contribution at such a meeting will be based on the report of the forum to them.
Similarly, Abdullahi Adamu, the Vice Chairman of Keffi Concerned Group, told Daily Trust that his forum will honour such a meeting, but will remain steadfast on its objective to work for the development of Keffi community, and to oppose any initiative that short changes the people.
