Fake insurance: NIA presents mobile phones to Ogun VIO for tracking

To track holders of fake third party motor vehicle insurance and other insurances, the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has given mobile phones preloaded with genuine insurance policy holders to the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) in Ogun Sate.
The mobile devices, a product of the “Nigerian Insurance Industry Database (NIID)” will help for easy identification of genuine insurance documents by law enforcement agencies and relevant authorized persons.
The NIID, an initiative of the Nigerian Insurers Association officially launched in June 2012 is an information technology-based system that will facilitate easy collation and dissemination of statistical and other information relating to insurance while help check activities of fake documents.
Sakiru Oyefeso, council member, NIA joined by Sunday Thomas, director general of the NIA who over the weekend led a delegation of the Association to the Office of the VIO in Ogun State was received by Kayode Ademolake, permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the Bayo Otuyemi, the chief VIO.    
Oyefeso said the nation’s insurance industry is worried about the inability of Nigerian’s to enjoy the social and economic benefits of genuine insurance as a result of the activities of fake operators.
According to him, the situation is worrisome to the extent that in the event of accident or loss there is no compensation to victims or their dependants to enable them recuperate from their loss, having been given fake insurance certificate by people who do not have bearing with insurance.
