‘Groundnut remains an important forex earner for Nigeria’

The Country Project Manager of ICRISAT, Dr. Vabi Michael, has underscored the export value of  groundnuts in Nigeria and stressed the need to enhance the seed production and marketing at a grand scale.

“Groundnut was, and remains an important foreign exchange earner for Nigeria,” he said.

He stated this at the launch/exhibition of a Cook’s Guide for Smart Groundnut and Groundnut-based products for improved nutrition in Nigeria organised by Feed the Future Nigeria Livelihood project in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), ICRISAT and other partners.

The ICRISAT project manager noted that groundnut as an important component of smallholder farming systems in Northern Nigeria as well as important dietary components of rural and urban households in Nigeria.

“Most semi-urban and rural households depend on groundnut oil for regular cooking,” he added.

Dr Azeez Oseni of the Feed the Future Nigeria Livelihood project said the launch was part of efforts to raise awareness and demonstrate the nutritional and health benefits of consuming aflatoxin free groundnuts.
